Su influencia en la escena intelectual y art\u00edstica europea de los a\u00f1os veinte y treinta del siglo XX, as\u00ed como en la avant garde rusa, fue inmensa. Para quien se acerca por primera vez a la ense\u00f1anza de Gurdjieff, este libro es ideal. Con notable claridad y s\u00edntesis, ofrece una panor\u00e1mica de sus ideas fundamentales y propone ejercicios pr\u00e1cticos para constatarlas.En cinco conferencias enfoca su atenci\u00f3n sobre los diferentes estados de conciencia, la mecanicidad, el \u00abrecuerdo de s\u00ed\u00bb, el estudio de los diferentes centros del hombre y su divisi\u00f3n en siete categor\u00edas, siempre desde el punto de vista de los que \u00e9l puede llegar a ser.
