Merino no abandona nunca el realismo, sino que lo enriquece con aportaciones de toda \u00edndole, de tipo fant\u00e1stico, imaginativo o intelectual. Todo ello est\u00e1 ya presente en esta su primera novela, que presenta a un intelectual ya maduro, viudo, antiguo profesor depurado que trabaja en labores editoriales y que se retira a un pueblecito del norte de Espa\u00f1a tras recibir la noticia de que padece una enfermedad incurable. All\u00ed, retoma el viejo proyecto de una novela que intent\u00f3 escribir en su juventud, e intentar terminarla como si se tratara de una especie de testamento. Andr\u00e9s Choz escribe as\u00ed una novela de ciencia-ficci\u00f3n, repleta de contenido moral y con un contexto de drama rural, mientras vive otra novela distinta, esta vez de amor y de enfrentamiento con la muerte.
