La convivencia de un grupo de personas que deciden llevar a cabo una experiencia de vida comunitaria permite a Iris Murdoch hacer una exploraci\u00f3n filos\u00f3fica sobre el origen de la moralidad y de los comportamientos humanos a trav\u00e9s de la confrontaci\u00f3n entre los impulsos carnales y los religiosos. A la sombra y amparo de un convento habitado por una peque\u00f1a comunidad de monjas, cuya superiora ejerce una omnipresente funci\u00f3n de orientaci\u00f3n y control de vidas ajenas, un grupo de homosexuales, esquizofr\u00e9nicos y alcoh\u00f3licos enfrentan sus represiones, sus miedos y sus culpas con la inocencia de la juventud. Iris Murdoch desarrolla armoniosamente el pasado y el presente de los personajes, dejando patente su sensibilidad y talento para crear tipos humanos en un ambiente opresivo y enfermizo. Trata sus problem\u00e1ticas con un humor distante que permite asistir a los conflictos de conciencia sin caer nunca en el t\u00f3pico. La campana se sit\u00faa a medio camino entre la novela de tesis y la figuraci\u00f3n simb\u00f3lica. Comparada en su d\u00eda con Virginia Woolf, el mundo literario de Iris Murdoch est\u00e1 animado fundamentalmente por el deseo de recuperar una concepci\u00f3n humanista de la novela mediante la plasmaci\u00f3n de personajes aut\u00f3nomos, distantes del autor y no reducibles a simples categor\u00edas sociol\u00f3gicas o a tipos psicol\u00f3gicos determinados.
