Corr\u00eda el verano de 1919, apenas terminada la guerra, y su madre trabajaba all\u00ed como sirvienta. Aquel d\u00eda el peque\u00f1o Faraday se sinti\u00f3 abrumado por la grandeza y la opulencia de la casa, hasta tal punto que no pudo evitar llevarse a hurtadillas un peque\u00f1o recuerdo.Treinta a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, tras el fin de una nueva guerra mundial, el destino lleva a Faraday, convertido ahora en m\u00e9dico rural, de nuevo a Hundreds Hall. All\u00ed sigue viviendo la se\u00f1ora Ayres con sus dos hijos, Caroline y Roderick, pero las cosas han cambiado mucho para la familia, y donde antes hab\u00eda riqueza ahora hay s\u00f3lo decadencia. La mansi\u00f3n muestra un aspecto deplorable y del mismo modo, gris y meditabundo, parece tambi\u00e9n el \u00e1nimo de sus habitantes. Betty, la joven sirvienta, asegura al doctor Faraday que algo maligno se esconde en la casa, y que quiere marcharse de all\u00ed.Con las repetidas visitas del doctor a la casa para curar las heridas de guerra del joven Rod, el propio Faraday ser\u00e1 testigo de los extra\u00f1os sucesos que tienen lugar en la mansi\u00f3n: marcas de quemaduras en paredes y techo, ruidos misteriosos en mitad de la noche o ataques de rabia de Gyp, el perro de la familia.
