La novela comienza en 1912, cuando conoce y se casa con Mari Juana, bondadosa como \u00e9l, pero un poco m\u00e1s despierta. En 1913 nace su hija Lisa. A trav\u00e9s del paso del tiempo y de la evoluci\u00f3n de estos personajes, y otros que ir\u00e1n apareciendo, iremos viendo diferentes Barcelonas. La Barcelona de su juventud, la del a\u00f1o 1912, estaba viva, brillante, alegre. La cupletista Raquel Meller empezaba a despuntar en el Arnau y la Fornarina y la Chelito triunfaban en el Paralelo. El Cerro-Park hab\u00eda abierto ese a\u00f1o, el casino de la Arrabassada lo hab\u00eda hecho el a\u00f1o anterior y todav\u00eda no hab\u00eda entrado en decadencia debido a la prohibici\u00f3n del juego, la Banda Eslava tocaba con gran \u00e9xito en el Tibidabo, y el Bar\u00e7a acababa de ganar su segunda copa del Rey, celebrada en el campo de la calle Industria.
