El Campo del Alfarero, que ha pasado por permuta a la propiedad de la abad\u00eda de San Pedro y San Pablo, comienza a ser arado por los monjes. En alg\u00fan momento, la reja topa con un macabro resto: una trenza de pelo que, pronto se comprobar\u00e1, corresponde al cad\u00e1ver de una mujer, enterrado hace alg\u00fan tiempo. El alfarero que habit\u00f3 en aquel campo es ahora monje de la abad\u00eda. Se trata de fray Rualdo, que abandon\u00f3 a su bella mujer a impulsos de su vocaci\u00f3n; de ella nunca m\u00e1s se supo. \u00bfSer\u00e1n suyos los restos del campo del alfarero? Sulien, un novicio no muy convencido, miembro de la familia que hab\u00eda sido antigua propietaria del campo, despeja cualquier duda: la ex esposa de Rualdo contin\u00faa viva. El inter\u00e9s de Sulien en la investigaci\u00f3n resulta sospechoso. \u00bfQu\u00e9 pretende? \u00bfA qui\u00e9n trata de encubrir? Ser\u00e1 fray Cadfael, con su perspicacia y conocimiento del alma humana, quien se encargue de desvelar los secretos del joven&#8230; y de resolver el extra\u00f1o enigma de una muerte demasiado triste.
