Nome hace falta ser brujo ni adivino para reconstruir esta atm\u00f3sfera\u00bb, confes\u00f3Georges Simenon a su editor, Sven Nielsen, en 1961. En efecto, para escribir Eltren, se document\u00f3 profusamente sobre la invasi\u00f3n de Europa por losalemanes, pero dej\u00f3 madurar toda la informaci\u00f3n casi un a\u00f1o, cosa inusual en\u00e9l, que acostumbraba a concebir y escribir novelas en semanas, a lo sumo en unmes. Entretanto escribir\u00eda Betty, una novela sinrelaci\u00f3n alguna con la guerra. La vida anodina de MarcelF\u00e9ron, comerciante de aparatos de radio en Fumay, marido y feliz padre defamilia, da un vuelco cuando el 10 de mayo de 1940 los alemanes invadenFrancia. Junto con su mujer, que est\u00e1 embarazada, y su hija, Marcel huye de lazona de combate, pero en el tren separan a la familia, y el vag\u00f3n en que viajaMarcel es desenganchado a mitad de trayecto. El convoy sufre varios ataquesa\u00e9reos, y en una de las m\u00faltiples paradas sube de repente al vag\u00f3n Anna Kupfer,una joven misteriosa con la que Marcel, como en una burbuja en la que ni elpasado ni el futuro existieran ni fueran cuestionados, inicia una intensarelaci\u00f3n. Ya en el campo de refugiados, Marcel averigua un d\u00eda que su mujer ehijos est\u00e1n en un hospital a poca distancia. Sin dudarlo, acude a su lado y,ante la puerta del hospital, se despide de Anna. Pasan los meses, y la vidavuelve a su curso normal; la familia incluso regresa a Fumay.
