A trav\u00e9s de sus p\u00e1ginas se respira el esp\u00edritu decadente de finales de siglo, y desfilan las lecturas y opiniones de Jos\u00e9 Asunci\u00f3n Silva (autor) sobre la literatura, la filosof\u00eda, la vida y la muerte.En este sentido, el personaje principal, Jos\u00e9 Fern\u00e1ndez, tiene muchos aspectos de su creador. Es un verdadero artista, un dandy de la sociedad \u00abburguesa\u00bb bogotana \u2014una sociedad que comenzaba a seguir los ejemplos y las modas de las grandes burgues\u00edas europeas, especialmente la francesa\u2014, un hombre joven, bien parecido, fuerte, magn\u00e1nimo, extravagante, pero sobre todo, rico y, precisamente por ello, libre.Siendo el autor hijo de un acomodado comerciante, distingue dos tipos de dinero: un dinero burgu\u00e9s, prosaico, maldito, con el cual se compara y por cuya falta se sufre, y otro po\u00e9tico: el que se hereda, como en el caso de nuestro protagonista, que se permite el lujo, la generosidad y la despreocupaci\u00f3n. El propio Fern\u00e1ndez dice que la lucha por la supervivencia diaria es un impedimento para vivir.
