El poderoso prelado Geberto aparece rodeado de gran pompa; el caballero Guillermo de Lythwood lo hace en un ata\u00fad, acompa\u00f1ado de su servidor Elave. \u00c9ste tiene la misi\u00f3n de conseguir que su se\u00f1or sea enterrado en el recinto de la abad\u00eda, pero al parecer Guillermo estaba en entredicho por algunas opiniones her\u00e9ticas. Geberto lo aprovecha para oponerse a la inhumaci\u00f3n. Las maniobras de Geberto encuentran apoyo cuando se descubre que tambi\u00e9n Elave se hace \u2014y hace en p\u00fablico\u2014 reflexiones que aquel considera heterodoxas. Adem\u00e1s, la grave acusaci\u00f3n de Geberto est\u00e1 reforzada por el testimonio de Fortunata, una doncella enamorada de Elave. A estos acontecimientos, inesperadamente, los acompa\u00f1a un asesinato. Como de costumbre, fray Cadfael debe abandonar su herbario para colaborar con su amigo, el gobernador Hugo, en la resoluci\u00f3n del caso.
