Nada m\u00e1s lejos de la realidad, es LITERATURA en su m\u00e1s grande expresi\u00f3n, una maravilla. Salamb\u00f3, fue publicada por vez primera en 1862. Es una novela hist\u00f3rica que narra las peripecias de la hija del caudillo cartagin\u00e9s Am\u00edlcar, as\u00ed como su historia de amor con el joven Matho. Pero este tenue argumento sirve de excusa al escritor para mostrar con enorme fidelidad el esplendor de la corte cartaginesa, con sus grandezas y miserias, sus guerras y victorias. De la intensidad del trabajo de Flaubert da idea el hecho de que, para escribir esta novela, se desplaz\u00f3 en dos ocasiones a visitar las ruinas de Cartago para empaparse in situ de aquella cultura. Indudablemente, el franc\u00e9s era un excepcional creador de caracteres \u2014no hay m\u00e1s que ver a Emma Bovary\u2014 y ello se plasma en el vigor y fuerza de los personajes de esta obra, considerada una de las diez mejores novelas hist\u00f3ricas jam\u00e1s escritas.Al finalizar la Primera Guerra P\u00fanica, Cartago vive un ambiente de inquietud y de revueltas. El ej\u00e9rcito mercenario que tanto la hab\u00eda defendido ante el acoso de Roma sitia ahora la ciudad africana, descontento por no percibir los honorarios prometidos. El l\u00edder de la rebeli\u00f3n, el libio Matho, espera conquistar Cartago y tambi\u00e9n a la hermosa Salamb\u00f3, hija de Am\u00edlcar Barca y sacerdotisa de la diosa Tanit. Sin duda, Salamb\u00f3 es uno de los hitos fundamentales de la novela hist\u00f3rica. Las profundas investigaciones y lecturas que llev\u00f3 a cabo Flaubert para esta reconstrucci\u00f3n a\u00fan sorprenden a los estudiosos de la Antig\u00fcedad cl\u00e1sica.
