Desde sus primeras expresiones la voz del gran escritor peruano ofrece un acento original, ronco, \u00e1spero y profundamente individualizado, siempre presente a lo largo de su trayectoria posterior. La continuidad de su obra se alimenta de sus obsesiones, heredadas de los grandes rom\u00e1nticos. Si en Los heraldos negros (1918) Vallejo sigue fiel a Dar\u00edo y a Herrera y Reissig, en Trilce (1922), ya decididamente vanguardista, lleva a la pr\u00e1ctica su innata aspiraci\u00f3n a la total libertad creadora; su poes\u00eda descoyuntada, herm\u00e9tica, llena de neologismos, irregularidades sint\u00e1cticas y met\u00e1foras audaces es capaz, sin embargo, de comunicar una honda emoci\u00f3n.
