El prop\u00f3sito de esta misi\u00f3n sin precedentes era negociar privilegios comerciales con el mundo occidental; a cambio, los misioneros europeos estar\u00edan autorizados a predicar el cristianismo en Jap\u00f3n. Pero, al fracasar su proyecto, los emisarios siguieron viaje hasta Espa\u00f1a e Italia y fueron los primeros japoneses en pisar tierra europea.Shusaku Endo, sin duda el m\u00e1s universal de los novelistas japoneses de este siglo, utiliza en El Samurai este casi olvidado cap\u00edtulo de la historia de su pa\u00eds para ofrecernos el conmovedor relato del viaje espiritual de Hasekura Rokuemon, un samurai simple y poco ambicioso, a quien sacan de su oscura existencia para embarcarlo hacia un pa\u00eds desconocido.Considerada, junto con Silencio, como la mejor obra de Endo, El Samurai constituye una profunda exploraci\u00f3n de la fe, la fragilidad, la ambici\u00f3n y la lealtad.La novela reproduce con bastante fidelidad la historia real de la expedici\u00f3n de 1613-1620.
