Al desplazar a Dios como creador \u00fanico de la especie humana, el gran naturalista brit\u00e1nico transform\u00f3 radicalmente la visi\u00f3n que el hombre moderno ten\u00eda de s\u00ed mismo, iniciando una revoluci\u00f3n conceptual cuyas consecuencias perviven hasta nuestros d\u00edas. Y si bien el nombre de Darwin quedar\u00e1 inscrito para siempre en los anales de la Historia, menos conocida es la figura del escoc\u00e9s Robert FitzRoy, sin cuya participaci\u00f3n la teor\u00eda de Darwin nunca hubiese visto la luz.Brillante oficial de la armada, FitzRoy es nombrado capit\u00e1n del Beagle con tan s\u00f3lo veintitr\u00e9s a\u00f1os de edad. Aunque su misi\u00f3n es cartografiar las costas de Tierra del Fuego, \u00e9l alberga otros proyectos igual de ambiciosos: demostrar la igualdad de los hombres de distintas razas, tesis contraria al esp\u00edritu de la \u00e9poca, y ratificar la teor\u00eda del origen del mundo tal como lo describe el libro del G\u00e9nesis. En oto\u00f1o de 1831, FitzRoy admite a bordo del Beagle al joven Charles Darwin, de veinti\u00fan a\u00f1os y aspirante a cl\u00e9rigo, que lo acompa\u00f1ar\u00e1 en la famosa expedici\u00f3n que conmocionar\u00eda el mundo. Pese a sus diferentes temperamentos, una sincera amistad unir\u00e1 a los hombres, que comparten una id\u00e9ntica pasi\u00f3n por la ciencia. Ambos persiguen denodadamente la verdad, aunque no tardan en comprobar que su concepto de verdad es radicalmente opuesto.
