En el arranque de la novela, Juan Preciado promete a su madre en el lecho de muerte ir en busca de su padre, Pedro P\u00e1ramo, un peque\u00f1o cacique pueblerino a quien no conoce. \u00abEl olvido en que nos tuvo c\u00f3braselo caro\u00bb le dice ella, y Juan parte hacia Comala, un pueblo m\u00edtico que es el verdadero protagonista de estas p\u00e1ginas. All\u00ed, envuelto en una tierra vieja que est\u00e1 sobre las brasas de la tierra, \u00aben la mera boca del infierno\u00bb, se encontrar\u00e1 con las voces de la memoria de personajes de ensue\u00f1o, que ir\u00e1n tejiendo una historia de deseos y pasado, de muertos y visiones irreales, que abarca desde mediados del XIX a las revueltas cristeras de comienzos del XX. Anclada en terreno firme, la novela se dispara en m\u00faltiples direcciones rompiendo el tiempo, confundiendo realidad y alucinaci\u00f3n, fundiendo violencia y lirismo con sus conversaciones entrecortadas.
