Fue publicada en el a\u00f1o 1929, y en ella nos acerca, desde su profundo conocimiento, a la cultura y costumbres de la China de principios del siglo XX, aunque lo cierto es que \u00e9ste \u00faltimo dato el lector se lo tendr\u00e1 que imaginar, ya que no hace ninguna referencia a fechas ni acontecimientos importantes a lo largo de todo el libro.Narrado en primera persona por su protagonista principal, Kwei-Lan nos cuenta su conmovedora historia, la de una mujer nacida en el seno de una familia distinguida que desde el mismo momento de su nacimiento es prometida en matrimonio con su futuro marido tal y como marcan las normas y tradiciones, tanto de su pa\u00eds como de su familia. Y para eso ser\u00e1 educada y preparada, para servir fielmente a su esposo seg\u00fan las costumbres orientales y llegar a ser la perfecta esposa que todos esperan que sea.Su futuro marido, por el contrario, recibe una educaci\u00f3n totalmente diferente, ya que se trasladar\u00e1 a vivir a Estados Unidos para recibir formaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica como m\u00e9dico. Al terminar la carrera y regresar de nuevo a su patria, sus padres le obligar\u00e1n a cumplir con el compromiso y casarse con su prometida, Kwei-Lan.Un mundo totalmente diferente se abrir\u00e1 ante ellos, pero principalmente para ella. El deseo de \u00e9l es desmarcarse de las r\u00edgidas normas orientales y acercase m\u00e1s a las occidentales. Ella tendr\u00e1 que acomodarse a una forma y ritmo de vida para la que no ha sido preparada, y que por otro lado le cuesta enormemente entender. Ha sufrido muchas penurias y sufrimientos en su educaci\u00f3n de \u201cbuena esposa\u201d y ahora se enfrenta a un mundo que desconoce y la desconcierta.
