Estos dos hombres, siempre que pueden conversan en un paseo, a la sombra de los olmos. Ambos personajes compadrean pero son de opiniones contrarias. Bergeret pretende penetrar en el alma del rector del seminario, hombre inteligente y piadoso. En realidad Lantaigne es una especie de prolongaci\u00f3n del propio Bergeret, como portavoz de ideas que el mismo catedr\u00e1tico no desea expresar personalmente. El decano de la facultad y el cardenal-arzobispo no ven con buenos ojos esta amistad. Pero los dos amigos no le dan importancia.En una aburrida ciudad provinciana, para Bergeret no hay otra distracci\u00f3n que sus estudios cl\u00e1sicos y las tertulias en el rinc\u00f3n de la librer\u00eda Paillot.
