Ashoke consigue un trabajo (es ingeniero de profesi\u00f3n) en Cambridge, y la pareja se lanza a una aventura americana. Ashoke, superviviente de un accidente de tren, se adapta con facilidad a su nuevo entorno, Ashima no y pasa los d\u00edas a\u00f1orando su casa y su familia. Cuando nace su primer hijo, la pareja prefiere seguir la tradici\u00f3n de permitir a la abuela darle su nombre. Env\u00edan una carta anunciando el nacimiento, pero la respuesta no llega. Pasan meses y tienen que poner alg\u00fan nombre. Ashoke, un lector voraz de literatura rusa, quiere poner el nombre de Gogol, a quien le\u00eda cuando sobrevivi\u00f3 al accidente de tren y hacia quien siente un lazo especial. Pero a Ashima no le gusta. La tradici\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n dicta que un ni\u00f1o nace con un nombre formal, y otro que se utiliza, y finalmente le dan el nombre de Nikhil, y el apodo de Gogol. Gogol Ganguli. La novela sigue el mapa de las vidas de Gogol, y de su hermana, Sonia, y su choque entre la cultura bengal\u00ed del hogar y la americana del colegio.
