La narraci\u00f3n es autobiogr\u00e1fica como en el Lazarillo de Tormes, aunque el personaje posee una doble dimensi\u00f3n, como p\u00edcaro y como pecador arrepentido, que corresponden a las dos fases sucesivas de su vida. La novela se convirti\u00f3 en el primer best seller de la historia, siendo traducida al ingl\u00e9s, al italiano, al lat\u00edn, al alem\u00e1n y al franc\u00e9s. Influy\u00f3 en la literatura de toda Europa. Si bien se suele citar a El Quijote como la primera novela moderna, otros opinan que ese m\u00e9rito corresponde a Guzm\u00e1n de Alfarache y que esta novela influy\u00f3 enormemente en Cervantes. El relato principal, narrado en un primoroso estilo, se halla cuajado de digresiones did\u00e1ctico-moralizantes y ejemplos eruditos antiguos y modernos, sacros o profanos; dominan sin embargo S\u00e9neca, el Evangelio, el refranero popular y los lugares comunes de la predicaci\u00f3n de la \u00e9poca. Tambi\u00e9n se introducen novelas cortas como la novela morisca Ozm\u00edn y Daraja, y otras de inspiraci\u00f3n m\u00e1s bien italiana como la de Dorido y Clorinia o la historia de Bonifacio y Dorotea, quiz\u00e1 con la funci\u00f3n de reposar la acci\u00f3n principal. El Guzm\u00e1n consolid\u00f3 la f\u00f3rmula de la novela picaresca en Espa\u00f1a y Europa, pues fue muy traducida, a veces incluso expurgada de las digresiones de tono moral que trufaban la narraci\u00f3n, lo que imped\u00eda el prop\u00f3sito moral que el autor se hab\u00eda propuesto; \u00e9ste hab\u00eda prometido una tercera parte que no lleg\u00f3 nunca a publicar. La principal caracter\u00edstica de la filosof\u00eda de la vida emanada del Guzm\u00e1n de Alfarache es un misantr\u00f3pico pesimismo: la vida del hombre es una milicia en la tierra contra un mundo hostil que se mueve por la violencia; el protagonista intenta una y otra vez reformarse pero siempre vuelve a caer en el vicio, a la manera de S\u00edsifo.
