En ella, mediado ya el siglo XV, Juan, un joven te\u00f3logo, maltratado por la brutalidad de los tiempos en que le ha tocado vivir y atenazado entre Oriente y Occidente no menos que entre la carne y el esp\u00edritu, se embarca en la expedici\u00f3n cristiana que parte para liberar Bizancio del asedio turco. All\u00ed caer\u00e1 en manos del sult\u00e1n Murad y despu\u00e9s, en las de su hijo Mohamed II, el futuro conquistador de Constantinopla, para el que ser\u00e1 tanto esclavo como confidente. Una era morir\u00e1 ante sus ojos mientras se anuncia una nueva indisolublemente unida a la pujanza econ\u00f3mica y a formas de violencia hasta entonces desconocidas.La novela tiene por contexto hist\u00f3rico el concilio de Basilea en el siglo xv. Per\u00edodo marcado por grandes conflictos entre la iglesia ortodoxa bizantina y la iglesia cat\u00f3lica romana. Los nobles, reyes, condes y dem\u00e1s, cada vez reclaman mayor participaci\u00f3n en temas eclesi\u00e1sticos y numerosos prelados, cardenales, obispos, pretenden descentralizar el poder papal. El ambiente que se respira es de profundo pesar y escepticismo. La corrupci\u00f3n de la iglesia y la crisis de la figura papal lleva a la iglesia cristiana a tratar de unificar la cristiandad recobrando los lazos con el mundo bizantino.
