En todo caso, la estrecha relaci\u00f3n entre ficci\u00f3n y realidad fue una de las caracter\u00edsticas de la obra de Maugham, a pesar de la obligada declaraci\u00f3n legal sobre el hecho de que &#8216;los personajes [de \u00e9sta o aquella obra] son completamente imaginarios&#8217;. En 1938 escribi\u00f3: &#8216;Realidad y ficci\u00f3n est\u00e1n tan mezcladas en mi obra que ahora, echando una ojeada en ella, dif\u00edcilmente puedo distinguir la una de la otra.&#8217;A trav\u00e9s de su protagonista principal, Philip Carey, Servidumbre humana desgrana una historia de formaci\u00f3n y sufrimiento abarcando diversas fases de la juventud y la sensualidad humana. Su orfandad, las humillaciones sufridas en la escuela a causa de su defecto f\u00edsico en un pie \u2014como en el caso de su autor, por la tartamudez\u2014 desarrollaron en Philip un car\u00e1cter introspectivo y extremadamente sensible, al tiempo que se form\u00f3 en \u00e9l \u201c\u2026el m\u00e1s exquisito h\u00e1bito humano: el de la lectura\u201d. Su rebeld\u00eda, plasmada en su descreimiento religioso y en sus ansias de aventura y libertad, provino de aquella falta de mayor cari\u00f1o. En Par\u00eds vivir\u00e1 infructuosamente el sue\u00f1o de convertirse en artista; y las sucesivas etapas de su vida \u2014los estudios de medicina en Londres, su desaforada pasi\u00f3n por una mujer vulgar pero seductora, el hambre y la pobreza\u2026\u2014 buscar\u00e1n la respuesta al sentido de la existencia, a cu\u00e1l debe ser la idea rectora que la gu\u00ede. Pero s\u00f3lo en uno mismo est\u00e1 poder descubrirlo: vivir ser\u00e1 tejer el tapiz del propio destino por la satisfacci\u00f3n de llevar a cabo la obra; y al comprenderlo, el protagonista encontrar\u00e1 inesperadamente la paz.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>W.
