Las grandes familias es el primer t\u00edtulo de una trilog\u00eda que se completa con La ca\u00edda de los cuerpos y Cita en los infiernos; trilog\u00eda en la que Druon nos presenta una visi\u00f3n \u00e1cida y descarnada de la alta sociedad francesa, los poderosos: aquella gerontocracia que, desde la c\u00fapula, hac\u00eda tambalearse el edificio social con sus movimientos; a la vez que nos muestra a toda una corte de trepadores, arribistas, gente sin escr\u00fapulos que vive a expensas de los poderosos, y que al menor s\u00edntoma de decadencia o de inseguridad salta al pelda\u00f1o siguiente para sobrevivir. En el pr\u00f3logo de Las grandes familias, el nacimiento del \u00faltimo v\u00e1stago de la uni\u00f3n La Monnerie \/ Schoudler se produce mientras los zepelines alemanes bombardean Par\u00eds, en plena Gran Guerra. Los gerontes de la familia por ambas l\u00edneas se presentan a reconocer al nuevo y \u00faltimo nieto y heredero. La confluencia de generaciones de la familia de los Schoudler, de or\u00edgenes austriaco-jud\u00edos ligados a la banca, a la prensa, y a la industria azucarera; la vieja y caduca aristocracia terrateniente de La Monnerie, unida al poder pol\u00edtico y al Ej\u00e9rcito por tradici\u00f3n, se engarza mediante el matrimonio de Jacqueline de La Monnerie, hija del gran poeta, con Fran\u00e7ois, heredero de la poderos\u00edsima familia Schoudler. Los problemas surgen cuando Fran\u00e7ois intenta tomar las riendas del peri\u00f3dico familiar. Las maniobras de No\u00ebl, su padre, y las de su t\u00edo Lucien Maublanc, Lul\u00fa, personaje odioso y odiado, dominado por el resentimiento de sus or\u00edgenes y el desprecio a que le somete la familia legal, acaban por producir un desenlace fatal.
