En esas circunstancias, el gato de \u00c9mile, al que \u00e9ste adora, se convertir\u00e1 en un pretexto para dar rienda suelta a los sentimientos largamente contenidosSimenon escribi\u00f3 El gato en 1966, acuciado por la dolorosa separaci\u00f3n de su segunda esposa, Denise, quien le hab\u00eda abandonado tras a\u00f1os de conflicto. La novela es un s\u00f3rdido drama protagonizado por un matrimonio de ancianos empe\u00f1ados en destruirse el uno al otro. El propio Simenon, persuadido de que la obra era un inconsciente arreglo de cuentas con el pasado familiar, afirm\u00f3 m\u00e1s tarde que El gato era su novela \u00abm\u00e1s cruel\u00bb, y su amigo Marcel Achard la calific\u00f3 como \u00abuno de sus libros m\u00e1s estremecedores\u00bb.
