S\u00e9ame permitido, sin embargo, indicar alguna minucia. El libro incluye trece relatos. El n\u00famero es casual o fatal \u2014aqu\u00ed las dos palabras son estrictamente sin\u00f3nimas\u2014 y no m\u00e1gico. Si de todos mis textos tuviera que rescatar uno solo, rescatar\u00eda, creo, El Congreso, que es a la vez el m\u00e1s autobiogr\u00e1fico (el que prodiga m\u00e1s los recuerdos) y el m\u00e1s fant\u00e1stico. No ocultar\u00e9 tampoco mi preferencia por El libro de arena. Hay tambi\u00e9n un cuento de amor, un cuento \u00abpsicol\u00f3gico\u00bb y el relato de un episodio dram\u00e1tico de la historia de estas rep\u00fablicas. He querido ser fiel, en estos ejercicios de Ciego, al ejemplo de Wells: la conjunci\u00f3n de un estilo llano, a veces casi oral, y de un argumento imposible. El curioso lector puede agregar los nombres de Swift y de aquel Edgar Allan Poe que, hacia 1838, renunci\u00f3 a su modo suntuario para legarnos los admirables cap\u00edtulos finales de su Arthur Gordon Pym. No escribo para una minor\u00eda selecta, que no me importa, ni para ese adulado ente plat\u00f3nico cuyo apodo es la Masa. Descreo de ambas abstracciones, caras al demagogo. Escribo para m\u00ed, para los amigos y para atenuar el curso del tiempo. J. L.
