Como explica Alberto Card\u00edn en el pr\u00f3logo, \u00abpocas veces se habr\u00e1n visto reunidos, en un libro de antropolog\u00eda, un c\u00famulo tal de situaciones divertidas, referidas con inimitable humor y gracia, y una competencia etnogr\u00e1fica tan afinada, como las que Nigel Barley ofrece en esta minuta de su trabajo de campo entre los dowayos, realizado en 1978. (\u2026) La virtud del libro de Barley, en este sentido, es que est\u00e1 lleno de individualidades que evolucionan como verdaderos actores, con una vida propia cargada de colorido, y una profusi\u00f3n y variedad verdaderamente asombrosos\u00bb. Y todo ello con una constante iron\u00eda (que otros definir\u00e1n como humor ingl\u00e9s), una \u00abiron\u00eda desveladora, cargada de sabidur\u00eda humana y te\u00f3rica, y radicalmente antropol\u00f3gica aunque tan poco la hayan practicado hasta ahora los mismos antrop\u00f3logos, convierte a Barley en un verdadero ejemplo para la profesi\u00f3n en dos sentidos: como envidiable vulgarizador sin p\u00e9rdida de rigor (cosa del todo inhabitual, y absolutamente necesaria), y como h\u00e1bil penetrador de la opacidad de otras culturas (y de otras mentes en general), de la \u00fanica manera que esto puede hacerse: con cautela, con humor, con ciertas triqui\u00f1uelas del oficio (cuya receta nos da), y confiando pacientemente en la suerte\u00bb.Barley estudi\u00f3 durante dos a\u00f1os, instalado en una choza de barro, a una muy desconocida tribu de Camer\u00fan. Aun conociendo la teor\u00eda del trabajo de campo, nunca lo hab\u00eda realizado en la pr\u00e1ctica. Y casi no sobrevive a \u00e9l. Su estudio fue editado por el Museo Brit\u00e1nico como una simple curiosidad.
